Nintendo updates official Zelda timeline confirming Breath of the Wild is a separate continuity

Online wars have been waged over the existence of a timeline for Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda series, and those battles will rage on long after we’re all dead. Whether you give much stock to the chronology or not, Nintendo maintains an “official” timeline on its website that places each game into context with the others. For years now, Breath of the Wild has seemingly existed on its own, but Nintendo has now outright confirmed that its events are their own separate timeline from what I guess will...

Lies of P did receive its own DLC in 2025 titled Overture, but otherwise the developer has been quiet about sequel talk, not even confirming if one is coming. Leave it to European trademark listings to spoil the fun, then, as a trademark for “Wonders of O” recently showed up on the EUIPO (European Union Intelle...

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis experience director attempts to explain Gen AI usage in new interview

It’s been a little over a week since we learned that Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis will have been partially built with Generative AI technology by developer Crystal Dynamics. That fact hasn’t left the news cycle all week, so it’s a little troubling when a recent interview with the game’s experience director, Jeff Adams, seems to fail to justify why Gen AI was so important.
In a clip posted by Game Informer on social media, Adams is asked about the extent that AI was used in Legacy of Atlantis,...

Pokémon GO environmental scans have reportedly been used to train military drones

In a rather bleak new report from Drone XL, it has been stated that roughly 30 billion environmental scans acquired by Niantic through Pokémon GO have been used to train US military drones and robots. For years now, Pokémon GO has offered bonuses to players who scan their surroundings, which Niantic has then taken and sold off to US defense contractor Vantor, among others.
Starting in 2021, Pokémon GO introduced a feature to record short videos of real-world locations, often PokéStops, that woul...

Original round, fat Pikachu plush is getting a second run for Pokémon’s 30th anniversary

Pokémon is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, in case you forgot. Surprisingly, The Pokémon Company has done quite a bit of promotion for the series, including new game announcements, a new game release (Pokopia), and merchandise lines at Target and beyond. In a nice throwback, it looks as if the original 1997 plush of Pikachu, lovingly dubbed “Chonkachu” by fans and already re-released earlier this year, will be getting a second production run as part of the 30th anniversary festivitie...

Review: Tron: Ares • Flixist

It’s still something of a shock that in 2025, Disney decided it would release another Tron movie. Titled Tron: Ares, the film had a long gestation period after the success of Tron: Legacy that saw it jump between multiple scripts, directors, and stars before landing upon the Jared Leto-starring vehicle we have now. One could read that as the project ultimately being doomed, but I guess Disney needs something for its streaming service amid years of controversy and dwindling profits.

When reviewing foreign films, I try not to be too harsh on certain comedic sensibilities as I’m whiter than Wonder Bread. It’s pretty obvious that I won’t know the full context behind certain gags or why foreign audiences are drawn to particular styles of humor. That’s one of the reasons I engage with foreign media so often: I would like to at least have a surface-level understanding of how cinema differs across language barriers and varying customs.

As a critic, am I trying to sell a movie to readers, or do I simply provide my thoughts and let the reader decide for themselves? Does the score I attach undo any critique I may provide?

I sometimes forgot how ubiquitous a director Akira Kurosawa was. While you can feel his influence in Hollywood productions, he obviously wasn’t as big of a deal in the USA as he was in his home country. Over in Japan, Kurosawa basically defined the modern blockbuster and helped launch the careers of many famous actors. He wasn’t ever stuck on one genre, but his name became synonymous with the jidaigeki genre, or “period piece,” and often had a focus on samurai stories. The most famous of those f...

For most Americans, our understanding of World War 2 begins and ends with America fighting the Nazis and winning. There’s been a growing trend in modern films to have stories spread out either across multiple installments or to make a single film the longest possible film it could be. Talking Inspiration And Design With Metal Slug Tactics' Cyrille Imbert and Aurélien Loos

Based on the popular SNK run-and-gun series, Metal Slug Tactic's reveal at E3 2021 stuck out to me as the most exciting thing at the show. Intrigued by this transformation of a beloved franchise into a genre that many may not have thought of, I spoke to Cyrille Impert, Dotmeu CEO, and Aurélien Loos, CEO of developer Leikir, about the upcoming roguelike tactics game. Despite being a once prosperous genre, the stealth action game has mostly fallen out of favor in recent times. Sure, there was Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain last generation and we do have the new Hitman Trilogy across modern platforms, but can you name any stealth games that aren’t indies? I’m struggling to do so and I’ve actually kept up with the genre. That’s what brings us to today’s review of Aragami 2. I'm not sure if I've properly expressed this, but DUSK is one of my favorite games of all time. Yakuza: Like A Dragon's Localization Is The Most Extensive In The Series' History

The upcoming release of Yakuza: Like a Dragon is a pretty monumental one for the Yakuza series. Serious Sam 4 Review: Not Quite The Series Savior

Not exactly classic, but far from modern, the Serious Sam series has always existed in a strange place in the industry. Upon its release in 2001, most critics readily called it a throwback to the golden era of shooters. With most titles trying to emulate Half-Life and its more cinematic approach, Serious Sam felt stripped back and free of excess. It wasn't exactly true, but you could make some kind of comparison. Fast forward to 2016, and id Software's excellent revival of the Doom series was...

Hellbound Review: Bound For The Floor

There's been something of a resurgence of the retro FPS from the indie scene in recent years. After more than a decade of copy and pasted Call of Duty campaigns and many imitators, it took smaller developers going back to the genre's roots to start bringing some actual innovation into an increasingly stale genre. There was more to shooters than linear hallways and hit scanning enemies, proven time and again by the likes of New Blood Interactive and 3D Realms. Despite a few less than stellar s...

Vomitoreum Review | TechRaptor

The original Doom may be approaching its 30th anniversary, but that hasn’t stopped dedicated modders from pushing the engine well beyond its limits over the years. While a lot of these releases have been free as downloadable expansions, others have been turned into commercial products using a free license for the GZDoom Source Port. That is the case with Vomitoreum, a rather ambitious total conversion for Doom that would have been utterly impossible to run back in 1994.

It’s always a happy day when niche console games get new leases on life thanks to belated PC ports. This started to turn around when The Silver Case saw a release on Steam in 2016, followed by Let It Die and No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again a few years later. The PC audience was hungry and publisher Grasshopper Manufacture finally got the memo.

It’s hard to believe that the Guilty Gear series is over 20 years old at this point. A franchise from a relatively unknown developer that once turned the fighting genre on its head, Arc System Works has become one of the biggest names in fighting games thanks to the success of this series. Emily is Away <3 Review

With modern social media becoming progressively more toxic and miserable, it can be quite a culture shock to take a look at how things were like in the past. That was the point of the original Emily is Away, a pseudo-choose-your-own-adventure title from 2015 that recreated 2005 AIM and had you talking to your crush while dealing with school. It was an interesting little curio of a title that had a surprising gut-punch of an emotional narrative, though one that felt maybe a little underdeveloped....

With the release of Yakuza 6: The Song of Life on PC and Xbox One tomorrow, fans of Kiryu Kazuma’s wild saga that weren’t PlayStation faithful will finally have a chance to experience the epic conclusion to his story. While maybe not the best game in the series (especially not when stacked up against Yakuza 0, Yakuza 5, or even Yakuza Kiwami 2), this late generation PS4 was a fitting coda to Sega’s crime thriller series that paved way for an entirely different take in the subsequent Yakuza: Like...

Have you ever come across a sequel that is so iterative, it almost feels redundant to talk about? That’s sort of the sensation I've had with Puyo Puyo Tetris 2, the hit sequel to the original puzzle mash-up that released in North America in 2017. In the wave of imitators to Dark Souls that have released over the last decade, Team Ninja’s 2017 hit Nioh stood out as perhaps the best attempt at replicating FromSoftware’s formula. It’s been a real treat seeing the Persona series grow from a relatively obscure RPG franchise into a semi-mainstream hit. It’s hard to pinpoint which title thrust the brand into the limelight, but most people will point to Persona 5 as the culprit. Nioh 2's PC Port is Good Enough, but Has Some Issues | TechRaptor

Update: Nioh 2's day-one update did fix the issue with 120 fps not working properly, but it's kind of a half measure. You can select the option and get 120 fps, but only sometimes. The game is very unstable in this mode and on my 3080 at 1080p, I would sometimes see drops to 40 fps. Locking the game to 60 mostly smooths out the experience and doesn't introduce as many framerate drops. For the time being, it's best to avoid this option.

Original review is as follows

At long last, Nioh 2 - The C...
